The birth of Cinema of New Zealand dates back to early 1900s when few New Zealand movies were filmed by Alfred Whitehouse. During the first part of the 20th century New Zealand films were mostly documentary. One of the best New Zealand movies of that time was Rewi's Last Stand by Rudall Hayward. In October 1978 the New Zealand Film Commission was founded by Parliament. It was the turning point for the cinema of New Zealand. Since that time lots of movies made in New Zealand have successfully been screened all over the world: The Piano (1993) by Jane Campion won three Academy Awards, Once Were Warriors (1994) by Lee Tamahori and, of course, best New Zealand films were made by famous director Peter Jackson. He filmed: Heavenly Creatures (1994), The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001 to 2003), King Kong (2005), The Lovely Bones (2009), and the upcoming The Lord of the Rings prequels The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013). A number of Hollywood movies were filmed in New Zealand and also directors used post-production New Zealand facilities and effects companies. Such movies shot in New Zealand are: The Last Samurai (2003) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2006), Avatar (2009).
