The first South Korean movies were Loyal Revenge and Scenes of Kyongsong City both 1919. Before the Korean War cinema had became very popular in Korea. Na Un-gyu, Shim Hun, Lee Myeong-woo shot lots of successful South Korean films. After receiving the Independence, one of the best South Korean movies Viva, Freedom was shot. During times of Korean War the film production was very poor. The Golden Age of South Korean cinema began in 1950s. Over 100 South Korean films were produced each year, but in 1960s the era of censorship started. The flourished South Korean cinema industry was almost destroyed. All films were full of propaganda in contrast of "alive" 1950s films. After political changes in 1979-1980 the new era of Korean cinema has started. During 1990s and 2000s few best South Korean films reached a domestic success. Shiri (1999), Joint Security Area (2000), Silmido (2003) and Taegukgi (2004). International critics also acclaimed South Korean movies. 2010 was a year of Korean films fame in Cannes and Los Angeles. The most famous South Korean director highly acclaimed by international audience is Kim Ki Duk with his Samaritan Girl and 3-Iron.

The Cat
